YMCA Expansion
Lakin Foundation YMCA of Atlantic
Lakin Foundation YMCA of Atlantic
Welcome to the future Lakin Foundation YMCA of Atlantic.
For the past 100 years, the Nishna Valley Family YMCA has been a cornerstone of the Atlantic community and a wellness hub for residents, visitors, and members from across the Midwest. Now, through the transformative leadership of Vision Atlantic and a generous lead gift from the Charles E. Lakin Foundation, the YMCA is poised for a historic renovation. In recognition of this extraordinary contribution, the facility will be rebranded as the Lakin Foundation YMCA of Atlantic upon completion of the project.
More than a Building
The new Lakin Foundation YMCA of Atlantic is more than a building, it’s a bold step forward for our community. This renovation and expansion project brings to life the dreams and aspirations of residents across the region, positioning Atlantic as a premier recreation hub between Omaha and Des Moines. Through thoughtful design and innovative amenities, the new YMCA will serve people of all ages, creating spaces for seniors to gather and stay active, safe hangouts for teens after school, and dynamic areas for young families and children to learn and play.
Beyond Wellness
In addition to upgraded fitness spaces, the new facility will offer a wide range of community-focused features that go far beyond traditional wellness. From a children’s museum and indoor play café to a modern movie theater that doubles as an e-sports arena and lecture hall, this YMCA is designed to foster connection, creativity, and lifelong learning. A new concessions area, coffee shop, and outdoor patio with fire pits and games will offer spaces to relax and socialize, while expanded Childwatch, STEAM rooms, and accessible locker rooms ensure everyone in our community feels welcome.

Dan Haynes
Executive Director
“The YMCA renovation and expansion is the result of years of thoughtful research, community forums, and multiple surveys designed to truly listen to the needs and hopes of our residents—both in Atlantic and throughout a 40-mile radius. This project brings those dreams to life, positioning Atlantic as a true ‘recreation hub’ between Omaha and Des Moines. I’ve had the honor of serving the Nishna Valley Family YMCA for over 30 years, and I’m incredibly proud to see this vision taking shape. This expansion will transform what we can offer, from infants to seniors, enhancing quality of life, promoting health and wellness, and supporting the sustained growth of our entire region.”
